Ann Louise Harmeier was a smart, outgoing, talented 20-year-old getting her college education at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. The semester was just getting started for Ann, and she had already moved back to campus from her home in Cambridge City. On the morning of September 12, 1977, Ann was returning back to campus after spending the weekend at home to visit a friend in the hospital. Before leaving, she promised her mother, Marjorie Harmeier, that she would call once she arrived safely. That call never came. When Ann failed to appear for class or rehearsal, her mother and friends immediately grew concerned. Marjorie decided to retrace the route that Ann would have taken and discovered her daughter’s car along State Route 37, roughly twenty minutes from Bloomington. Friends and family relentlessly searched for Ann, but she remained missing. Five weeks later, on October 18, 1977, a farmer discovered a female body in a rural area, which would be identified as Ann Harmeier. She had been found with her hands bound behind her back using one of her shoelaces, while the other shoelace had been tied around her neck. Her official cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation, consistent with strangulation. Investigators have explored multiple theories and questioned several potential suspects over the years, but no arrests have been made. Ann’s case remains open, and authorities are still searching for information that may help identify her killer. Any information should be directed to the Indiana State Police.
