Rita Buffington, a 33-year-old resident of Bloomfield, IN, lived independently despite a mild intellectual disability. On July 27, 1994, she disappeared without explanation. Nearly two weeks later, on August 8, 1994, her body was discovered by three fishermen at Shake Lake No. 2 in the Greene-Sullivan State Forest. She was only 18 miles away from home. An autopsy confirmed that she had been murdered. Investigators identified a potential suspect, a man Rita previously lived with, who was known to frequent the lake where she was found. Although he and several others were questioned, no arrests were made. The case remains open, and investigators continue to seek out information that could lead to the identification of Rita’s killer. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police or the Green/Sullivan County Sheriff’s Departments.
