Mary Beth Grismore

1978

Marshall County

On February 22, 1978, Mary Beth Grismore, a mother of two from Marshall, IN, disappeared from her home under suspicious circumstances. Mary had recently remarried; her husband, David Grismore, lived in Iowa, and she planned to relocate there to return to her roots. The year before, she had finalized a divorce from her former husband, Robert Hale, the father of her children. On the evening of February 21, 1987, Mary reportedly had a girls’ night with her sister and two friends in Terre Haute. They returned Mary to her home at approximately 1:30 am the next morning. That was the last confirmed sighting of her. Mary was reported missing shortly afterward, but weeks passed without finding her. On May 3, 1978, her body was found in the trunk of her own car, which had been abandoned in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn in Whitehall, OH. Mary was identified through dental records, and her cause of death was determined to be strangulation. The case quickly went cold. The only physical evidence publicly reported was a set of fingerprints on the rearview mirror of her car. Federal, Indiana, and Ohio investigators consider the case open and are looking for any information or tips that can be provided.
